Pardon the delay on follow up to the second part of our St. Aug/Babymoon trip - we had some computer issues and were without a computer for a few days.
The second part of our trip was highlighted by trips to the Castillo de San Marco and the Oldest House. The Castillo de San Marco is by definition the ultimate homecourt advantage. In 250 years, the fort was never taken/defeated. The pictures don't do it justice -- it is pretty massive with walls that are 18' thick to resist cannon fire.
The Oldest House was pretty cool as well. Built in 1723, it was built by the Spanish, then added onto by the Brits, and surprisingly stands in nearly original form today. I doubt my current home will be in the same condition 200 years from now.
St. Augustine is a nice place to visit if you are curious about history and want to find a place to relax. Thanks to M. Clark for the tip on the brewery and KT for the Italian restaurant. Both suggestions were solid and appreciated. Heather L - your seafood joint has gone downhill (as you anticipate).
One disappointing realization on the trip can be seen in the pictures above/below. What is wrong with the picture below? A beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic interrupted by our sweet Hyundai? What?! You can drive on the beach. Growing up in NASCAR country, I understand the history of racing on the beach back in the early 1900s or whatever. But that was then, and this is now. We used to think it was okay to burn our trash too. Shouldn't we know better now? With all the concerns of cleaning up oil spills, driving over kiddos' sandcastles seems to be counterproductive. Just my opinion.
Thanks for reading...
