Reading Rainbow

During C's maternity leave, I got into the blog world since short pieces were all that my tired brain and body could handle.  I'm proud of myself for already reading several books during O's leave, which draws to an end Wednesday, Aug. 4th when I go back to work.  We're heat-bound (the new cabin fever) and I would rather read books/blogs over crappy day time TV, though Owen and I became quite the World Cup and Tour de France fans.

I finally finished The Help, after putting it down over Christmas holidays about halfway through. Run, do not walk, to buy or reserve your copy from the library.  I also read Council of Dads (good, similar to Tuesdays with Morrie) and a few book club books.  For the trip to MN, I have been saving the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and a plan to finish Blink.

I've previously documented our love of reading that the Schwie's passed onto Carter, and possibly Owen.  One thing that I may not have mentioned is that I rarely buy myself books.  I read them way too fast and don't like to reread books.  We are very frequent visitors to the library (conveniently located next to C's school). For Carter, we borrow about 12-15 kids' books every 2 weeks.  For me, I may browse the bestseller area and usually just request particular titles online, held for pick up.  Katie's fancy, and rich?, library even mails requested titles to her house for FREE (which is good now since she is on bed rest).

Looking for new authors or titles to read?  There are a million places to find them like reader suggestions at the WSJ's The Juggle (which is an awesome blog), browsing Goodreads, and others from friends/family like Grammy Pat, MJFW, or Heather.  Magazines like EW, People, Time always do "Top 10 Books of the Year" around Christmas or beach reading suggestions at the beginning of summer

Readers, do you have any suggestions for good, light summer reading, aka my brain is too tired to try to do too much intellectually challenging literature?  Some of my favs are Jennifer Weiner, Jodi Picault, James Patterson, Emily Griffin, Janet Evanovich, Candace Bushnell...leave me a comment or two to share.

Jodi Picoult is not "light" reading but have you read her latest? It came out in March - HOUSE RULES

Jennifer Weiner's new book FLY AWAY HOME was great, it came out about 2 weeks ago

Emily Giffin also released a new one in June HEART OF THE MATTER

And Janet Evanovich is all the way up to 16 w/Sizzling Sixteen, she released it a few weeks ago (not my fave but a good Stephanie Plum nonetheless)

Have you read any Elin Hilderbrand? Her books take place in and around Nantucket, I just finished her latest THE ISLAND and it was a good vacation read.

And Grandma Marge would be upset if I didn't mention the latest Mary Higgins Clark THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE- it came out in April and was a good one too.

Lisa Scottoline is an author that I've enjoyed reading - mostly legal thrillers that take place in PA. She's a former atty turned author.

Let me know if you want/need more ideas!

The Girl with Dragon Tattoo is SO GOOD!! Also, When did I get this way is funny, about motherhood , Wilson is the author, I think.

One of the book publishers I subscribe to has been pushing One Day. I read the summary and have no interest but the reviews are decent. Other than that, any Christopher Buckley book is good for a few laughs (except Losing Mum and Pup - great book but sad).

One more. To Kill a Mockingbird is 50 years old this year. Loved that book when I was younger and haven't read it in years. I'm sure it's one that C and O will eventually read so this might be a good time to get reacquainted with it.

Jen Lancaster is a good one - she's really funny. Her first book is Bitter is the New Black. The others do relate a little to the first.

If you like Emily Giffin and Candace Bushnell, you'd like Beth Harbison. She wrote Shoe Addicts Anonymous and Hope in a Jar.

I also like Lauren Weisberger. She wrote Devil Wears Prada and several others. They're all good.

I've heard Sophie Kinsella is also good, but I haven't read anything by her.
